Reminder: Deadline to Vote and Annual Meeting Reminder

This is a reminder that this Friday, April 24th is the last day to submit your vote at the WWSC office in Weston (12:00 p.m. deadline for hand delivery to the office drop box), unless you plan to attend the Annual Meeting on Monday, April 27th, where you can vote in person until 6:15pm.  All mailed ballots must be received by Friday, April 24th.

There is information on the WWSC website that explains the Board’s reasoning for calling this vote as well as information provided at the Town Hall held on April 6th.  The below information also includes many of the points discussed and is provided in response to questions:

We have had the opportunity to visit with many of you to discuss the importance of a merger with North Collin Special Utility District (NCSUD).  For many years WWSC has tried to secure surface water rights by becoming a North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) member so that we could ensure a reliable water supply to our area for years to come.  Unfortunately, we have reached the understanding that joining the NTMWD will not be possible, as they are not taking on any new customers.  This also applies to the City of Weston.  Many of you may be aware of the struggles several of our neighboring cities are currently experiencing trying to secure water to meet their growing demands – this is a huge challenge for everyone in our area, not just us, as none of these cities are able to get surface water from NTMWD or anywhere else anytime soon.

It is the belief of the WWSC Board that our CO-OP is growing to a size that it can no longer be easily managed by a volunteer board.  It is a difficult reality to face, but it is time. Many past and present board members have worked extremely hard to keep our water flowing over the years.  The volunteers have cumulatively given thousands of hours both day and night to be hands-on keeping the well running during winter storms, fighting water leaks, answering member calls in the middle of the night, keeping up with agency reporting, controlling costs, preparing financials, conducting audits, and properly operating the utility according to State regulations.  With the ever-increasing work load, it is time for a professional, well equipped, knowledgeable, and well managed operation to take us into the future.

We have confidence that NCSUD can provide all of those things mentioned and more. Allen Knight is the General Manager. He has been with NCSUD for 28 years, which means he grew North Collin from a small co-op like ours to a 3800-water meter system. He is on the board of Texas Rural Water Association, which will be invaluable in obtaining possible future grants.   Our long-time engineer Eddy Daniels is also the North Collin SUD engineer.  Eddy knows our systems and has analyzed and mapped out our future needs.  NCSUD is a governmental entity, and holds elections that must be conducted pursuant to state law.  There are numerous SUDs like NCSUD across DFW and the state that are charged with providing water to rural and suburban areas.

The most important thing we can do for all WWSC members today is secure an adequate and reliable long term water supply for the Weston area.

Thank you for your time and if you have questions at all, your calls are always welcome.
